Camille examined the records for nearly two weeks.

Her findings were worse than I had expected.

Blake had been moving small amounts of money for almost three years. The transfers were designed to look like consulting fees, charitable donations, or business expenses.

Together, the payments totaled more than $1.6 million.

But money alone did not explain the plan.

“We can prove that the transfers were misleading,” Camille told me during a private meeting. “What we still need is evidence showing why they created these companies and what they intended to do next.”

So I continued behaving as if I knew nothing.

I attended family dinners.

I listened while my mother praised Blake.

I smiled when Taryn asked whether Northstar might soon be sold.

I pretended not to notice when Russell repeatedly asked about the terms of my father’s trust.

Blake became increasingly confident.

He began leaving documents on his desk.

He spoke freely on the phone.

He stopped hiding his plans carefully because he believed I was too overwhelmed to investigate him.

The Dinner That Revealed Everything

Gideon hired a licensed investigator to follow the financial connections.

The investigator soon learned that Blake, my mother, Taryn, and Russell were meeting privately at an upscale restaurant near SouthPark.

They reserved a private dining room under Russell’s company name.

Through lawful investigative work, Gideon’s team obtained a recording of one of their conversations.

I listened to it in Gideon’s office.

At first, there was only the sound of glasses touching and chairs moving.

Then Russell spoke.

“I still can’t believe she signed those papers after the funeral.”

Blake laughed.

“She trusted me to explain everything. She never read the final pages.”

My chest tightened.

Taryn responded next.

“Once the judge accepts that she can’t manage the company, what happens?”

“The authority agreement becomes enforceable,” Blake said. “I take temporary control of Northstar. Then we push for a sale or settlement.”

My mother’s voice followed.

It was calm and practical.

“You must make her appear unreliable in court. I can testify that she has been confused since her father passed.”

For several seconds, I could not breathe.

My mother had cared for me when I was sick as a child. She had helped me choose my wedding dress. She had stood beside me at my father’s memorial and promised that our family would stay together.

Now she was discussing my reputation as though it were a business obstacle.

Russell lowered his voice.

“And our percentages remain the same?”

“Once the settlement is complete,” Blake answered, “everyone receives what we agreed.”

The recording continued, but I had already heard enough.

Gideon paused it.

“Marissa, we can stop them now.”

I looked at the silent speaker on his desk.

“Not yet.”

He studied my face.

“What are you thinking?”

“They plan to testify. Let them tell the entire story under oath. Then we show the court the truth.”

My Mother Took the Stand

Back inside the courtroom, Blake’s attorney called my mother as his first witness.

Judith walked to the witness chair with the confidence of someone who had rehearsed every sentence.

After promising to tell the truth, she folded her hands and looked toward the judge.

“Mrs. Keene,” Blake’s attorney began, “how would you describe your daughter’s ability to manage financial matters during the last several years?”

My mother lowered her eyes.

“Marissa has always been intelligent, but after losing her father, she changed. She became suspicious and made impulsive decisions.”

“Did she ask Blake to manage her affairs?”

“Yes,” my mother replied. “She said she could not carry the responsibility anymore.”

Blake turned slightly and looked at me.

He expected to see devastation.

I gave him nothing.

His attorney continued.

“Have you received any personal financial benefit from Mr. Donnelly’s management of your daughter’s assets?”

“Absolutely not,” my mother said. “I am only here because I love my daughter.”

When it was Gideon’s turn, he rose slowly.

“Mrs. Keene, you are certain you have never benefited from any company connected to Blake Donnelly?”

“I am certain.”

“And neither your younger daughter nor her husband has received money connected to Northstar Advisory Group?”

My mother looked directly at him.

“No one in our family has received anything.”

Gideon nodded.

“Thank you. I have no further questions.”

Blake looked pleased.

My mother returned to her seat with a quiet smile.

She believed Gideon had failed to challenge her.

In reality, he had given her every opportunity to tell the truth.

She had chosen the lie.

The Envelope Beside My Chair

Gideon sat down and looked at me.

I reached for the leather case.

The brass locks made a soft clicking sound as I opened it.

Inside was a large brown envelope containing bank records, digital reports, handwriting analysis, company registration documents, and a written transcript of the restaurant conversation.

I placed it in Gideon’s hands.

He stood.

“Your Honor, we request permission to introduce evidence directly connected to the ownership of the disputed assets and the credibility of the testimony presented today.”

Blake’s attorney rose immediately.

“We object. We have not reviewed these materials.”

Gideon remained calm.

“The records document ongoing efforts to conceal marital assets, misrepresent business transactions, and present altered agreements to this court.”

Judge Sloan looked toward him.

“Bring the documents forward.”

The courtroom became silent.

Gideon handed her the envelope.

She began with the bank records.

Then she reviewed the registration documents for Bright Harbor Outreach, Linden Ridge Management, and Clearwater Consulting.

She studied the forensic report showing that several pages had been added to the agreement after I signed the original documents.

Finally, she reached the restaurant transcript.

The longer she read, the more serious her expression became.

Blake’s smile disappeared.
