“You heard me.”

My exhaustion turned instantly into disbelief.

“After everything I’ve been through today, you’re standing here accusing me of that because of our baby’s eye color?”

He began pacing.

“Four girls, and then suddenly you give me a son who doesn’t even look like me?”

Something inside me finally snapped.

Not loudly.

Quietly.

After years of apologizing for things that were never mine to apologize for, I looked directly at him.

“The sex of our children was never something I controlled, Corbin. And Theo is your son.”

He moved closer.

“Don’t talk to me like I’m stupid.”

“Then don’t behave like you are.”

I had never spoken to him that way.

Perhaps that was why what happened next shocked me so deeply.

Corbin lost control for one terrible second and struck my cheek.

The room became completely silent.

I instinctively turned my body around Theo and held him against my chest.

Corbin seemed almost surprised by what he had done.

Then a voice came from the doorway.

“Step away from my daughter.”

Corbin froze.

So did I.

My father stood at the entrance holding a small blue stuffed bear.

He had arrived quietly enough that neither of us had noticed him.

But he had seen everything.

The Man Corbin Never Bothered to Know

Dad set the stuffed bear on the counter.

He did not shout.

That somehow made him more intimidating.

“Maren, are you hurt?”

I touched my cheek.

“I’m okay.”

Dad’s eyes moved to Theo.

“And the baby?”

“He’s okay.”

Corbin recovered enough to become defensive.

“Everett, stay out of this. This is between my wife and me.”

My father’s expression did not change.

“Not anymore.”

A nurse who had heard the raised voices appeared in the hallway, followed almost immediately by hospital security.

Dad stepped aside.

He didn’t threaten Corbin.

He didn’t touch him.

He simply told the nurse what he had witnessed.

Within minutes, Corbin was escorted away from the maternity floor.

Before leaving, he turned toward me.

“You’ll regret making this bigger than it is.”

My father answered before I could.

“No. I think you’re going to regret making it smaller than it is.”

When the door finally closed, I began crying.

Not because my cheek hurt.

Because something I had spent years defending had finally become impossible to defend.

Dad sat beside me.

“How long has he treated you this way?”

I couldn’t look at him.

“He has never done that before.”

Dad waited.

I knew he understood what I was avoiding.

“But the controlling behavior?”

I nodded.

“A long time.”

He was quiet for several seconds.

Then he reached for my hand.

“You and those children are coming home with me.”

Two days later, Corbin demanded a paternity test.

I agreed immediately.

Not because I owed him proof, but because I wanted the accusation ended permanently.

The result came back exactly as I knew it would.

Probability of paternity: greater than 99.9 percent.

Theo was Corbin’s biological son.

Corbin sent me three messages after receiving the result.

The first said he had overreacted.

The second blamed stress.

The third demanded that we meet with lawyers because he intended to seek custody of the girls.

I showed the messages to Dad.

He read them once.

“Do you want him back?”

The question startled me.

I looked toward the living room, where Paige was helping Sadie build a puzzle while Hallie and Brooke argued over markers.

Then I looked down at Theo sleeping in my arms.

“No.”

It was the easiest answer I had given in years.

Corbin came to my father’s property outside Colorado Springs the following week with his attorney.

Until that morning, he still believed Dad lived in a modest cabin.

He had never driven beyond the small guesthouse near the entrance to the property.

His expression changed when the gate opened and revealed the main residence farther up the hill.

But the real surprise came when Dad walked into the study.

He had attended a military retirement ceremony earlier that morning and was still wearing his formal uniform.

Corbin stared at the three silver stars on his shoulders.

“What is this?”

Dad stopped beside me.

“My uniform.”

Corbin’s attorney glanced at the ribbons, then back at Dad.
