Drinks to help control high cholesterol

Part 1 of 2

What Is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance found in every cell of the body. While it plays a vital role in hormone production, digestion, and cell membrane function, elevated cholesterol levels — especially LDL (low-density lipoprotein) — can be harmful. LDL, often labeled as “bad cholesterol,” can build up in the arteries, forming plaque that narrows the vessels and restricts blood flow, increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Signs That May Point to High Cholesterol

High cholesterol typically develops without obvious symptoms, which is why regular testing is essential. However, certain risk indicators and physical signs might suggest elevated cholesterol levels:

  1. Fatty deposits around the eyes or under the skin
  2. Yellowish bumps or patches on the skin
  3. A greyish ring around the cornea (corneal arcus)
  4. Swelling or nodules around joints, especially the knuckles
  5. Erectile dysfunction

Additionally, poor lifestyle habits like unhealthy eating, inactivity, smoking, excessive alcohol use, and stress can all increase your risk. A family history of high cholesterol, especially familial hypercholesterolemia, is another red flag.

Top 10 Heart-Healthy Drinks to Help Lower Cholesterol

1. Ginger & Lemon Water

Start your morning with a glass of lukewarm water blended with fresh lemon juice and a spoonful of ginger juice. This combo may help reduce cholesterol levels, thanks to ginger’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds.

2. Green Tea

Rich in catechins (a type of antioxidant), green tea helps lower LDL cholesterol by reducing its absorption in the intestines. It also promotes HDL (“good”) cholesterol. Drinking 2–3 cups daily can offer significant cardiovascular benefits.

3. Turmeric Milk

A warm glass of milk mixed with turmeric powder, taken on an empty stomach, may support cholesterol control. Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, has anti-inflammatory and lipid-lowering properties.
