Hidden Moral Stories

Five Minutes After Our Divorce, My Ex Told Me to Take Our Daughters Because He Had a Son Coming—So I Quietly Left California With the Girls. Hours Later, His Family Gathered to Celebrate the Baby Boy They Called Their “Future Heir,” Until One Question From the Doctor Made My Ex’s Smile Disappear.

Part 2 of 3

“Yes, and everyone in this room has spent weeks being told that child is Nathan’s.”

Douglas touched his wife’s arm.

“Corinne, enough.”

She ignored him.

Nathan’s excitement had vanished.

“Vanessa, just answer the question.”

Her face tightened.

“I gave you the dates my previous physician gave me.”

“Were you seeing anyone else?”

Vanessa stared at him.

“Not here.”

That answer changed everything.

Dr. Monroe quietly asked the family to step outside.

Within minutes, the celebration had become seven uncomfortable people scattered through a medical hallway while Vanessa remained behind a closed door.

At almost the same time, Elise was helping Grace place her shoes into an airport security bin.

Neither she nor the girls had any idea what was happening.

Lily remained unusually quiet.

After security, they found seats near enormous windows overlooking the runway.

Grace pressed both palms against the glass.

“Is that ours?”

“Wrong airline.”

“That one?”

“Also wrong.”

Grace frowned thoughtfully.

“There are too many airplanes.”

Elise laughed for the first time that day.

When she turned back, Lily was sitting beside the luggage, staring at Elise’s phone.

“Dad hasn’t called?”

“Not yet.”

Lily picked at the edge of her sleeve.

“Maybe he forgot what time we leave.”

Children, Elise thought, have an astonishing ability to invent kinder explanations for adults who disappoint them.

She took Lily’s hand.

“I want you to remember something. Whatever choices grown-ups make, those choices don’t measure how important you are.”

Lily nodded, though Elise could tell she did not fully understand.

Then the phone began vibrating.

Nathan.

Elise watched it ring until it stopped.

Thirty seconds later, it rang again.

Then again.

Grace looked over.

“Dad?”

“Yes.”

“Are you answering?”

“Not right now.”

Lily hesitated.

“Maybe he wants to say goodbye.”

For Lily’s sake, Elise almost answered.

Then a feeling she could not explain told her not to.

She silenced the phone.

The Secret Nathan Had Kept

At the clinic, Nathan was calling Elise because his world had shifted within less than an hour.

Vanessa had eventually admitted there had been another man.

She could not say with certainty which man was connected to the pregnancy.

Nathan stood in the hallway, staring at her.

“You let me tell everyone.”

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

“I believed the timing worked.”

“You believed?”

“I wasn’t trying to trap you.”

Nathan laughed once, without humor.

“My family bought furniture. My grandfather was preparing an account for him.”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“And you were perfectly happy to walk away from your marriage before anyone asked you to.”

That stopped him.

Corinne stepped between them.

“We need a genetic test.”

Vanessa glared at her.

“This is none of your business.”

“You made it my business when you invited seven of us here to celebrate our grandson.”

Nathan rubbed his forehead.

Then Vanessa said something that changed the argument entirely.

“Nathan shouldn’t be giving anyone lectures about honesty.”

He looked at her sharply.

“Don’t.”

Vanessa reached into her handbag.

“Why not? Maybe your mother should hear about Lily.”

Corinne went still.

“What about Lily?”

Nathan’s face lost its color.

“Nothing.”

Vanessa looked directly at Corinne.

“Eighteen months ago, Nathan secretly arranged a DNA test on his oldest daughter.”

Douglas stared at his son.

“Why would you do that?”

Nathan lowered his voice.

“I had questions.”

“About Elise?”

“I thought maybe…”

He stopped.

Vanessa finished for him.

“He learned Lily wasn’t biologically related to him.”

No one spoke.

Corinne’s reaction was different from everyone else’s.

She did not look surprised.

She looked afraid.

Nathan noticed.

“Mom.”

Corinne turned away.

“Not here.”

“You knew something.”

“Nathan, not here.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“That’s exactly what he said when I found the paperwork.”

Meanwhile, at the airport, Elise received a message from a number she did not recognize.

It was Vanessa.

“Please answer me.”

Elise almost blocked the number.

Then another message arrived.

“There’s something Nathan never told you about Lily.”

Elise’s fingers stopped moving.

Lily was sitting nearby helping Grace arrange animal stickers inside a travel notebook.

Elise typed back.

“What are you talking about?”

Vanessa responded with an image.

It was a photograph of a document.

Across the top were the words AUTHORIZATION FOR GENETIC RELATIONSHIP TESTING.

Below them appeared Lily’s legal name.

At the bottom was Nathan’s signature.

The form was dated eighteen months earlier.

Elise enlarged the photograph.

Her heart began pounding.

Nathan had secretly tested Lily.

Why?

Vanessa answered only one more question.

“I found the paperwork in his desk months ago.”

Then she stopped responding.

The boarding announcement began.

Elise stood slowly.

Whatever that document meant, she was not turning around.

The Call Before Takeoff

Once aboard, Grace claimed the window seat, Lily took the middle and Elise sat beside the aisle.

Her phone rang again.

Nathan.

She ignored it.

A message appeared.

“Do not leave until we talk.”

Then another.

“It’s about Lily.”

Elise stared at those four words.

Finally, she typed:

“You had eighteen months to talk.”

Nathan called immediately.

This time she answered.

“Where are you?”

“On the plane.”

“Get off.”

“No.”

“Elise, please listen.”

“I listened for twelve years.”

His breathing became uneven.

“Vanessa showed you the document?”

“You secretly tested our daughter.”

Nathan said nothing.

Elise looked toward Lily, who was helping Grace untangle her headphones.

“Why?”

“I needed an answer.”

“To what?”

A long silence followed.

Then Nathan spoke.

“Whether Lily was biologically mine.”

Elise gripped the armrest.

“And?”

“The report said she wasn’t.”

For several seconds, Elise could not process the sentence.

“That’s impossible.”

“I saw the results myself.”

“I’ve never been unfaithful to you.”

Nathan answered quietly.

“I know.”

Elise froze.

That was not the response of a man who believed his wife had betrayed him.

“What did you just say?”

“Elise—”

“If you knew that, why did you test Lily?”
