Caleb stared at the table.

“Mrs. Winslow, my mother would need medical attention if she saw this.”

“Then we won’t send her a picture.”

He laughed.

We ate until we were uncomfortable and spent the evening watching cartoons he had loved as a child.

When it was time to leave, he hugged me tightly.

“I don’t know when I’ll be back.”

“You don’t need an invitation.”

He nodded.

“Thank you for everything.”

“You earned every slice of pizza.”

He laughed, but when he stepped back, there were tears in his eyes.

The following morning, his family’s vehicle disappeared down the street.

I stood at the window and watched until it was gone.

I thought the hardest part of that day was saying goodbye.

I was wrong.

Everything Valuable Was Gone

Later that morning, I went upstairs.

My bedroom door was partly open.

I knew I had closed it.

Then I saw my jewelry box.

The lid was raised.

My grandmother’s pearl earrings were missing.

So was my mother’s wedding ring.

Two necklaces, a gold bracelet, several other pieces of family jewelry, and emergency cash Grant kept in the dresser were gone as well.

My hands began trembling.

Grant appeared behind me.

He looked at the open jewelry box.

Then he said something that changed my life.

“He took it.”

I turned.

“Who?”

“Caleb.”

“You don’t know that.”

Grant looked toward the empty drawer.

“Who else was here yesterday?”

I felt sick.

The authorities came to document what had happened.

They asked questions and made a list of missing items.

When one officer asked who had recently been inside our house, Grant answered before I could speak.

“Caleb Mercer. The neighbor’s boy. He left for college this morning.”

I remember staring at my husband’s face.

He sounded completely certain.

I hated hearing Caleb’s name associated with what had happened.

But I had no explanation.

And Caleb did not call.

Twenty Years of Silence

Days became weeks.

Weeks became months.

Nothing was recovered.

No clear answer ever came.

I picked up the phone many times, intending to call Caleb.

But every time, I imagined asking the question.

Did you take those things?

And then I put the phone down.

Grant told me Caleb’s silence was proof enough.

“If he cared about you, he would explain himself.”

Eventually, I stopped arguing.

But I never stopped wondering.

Years passed.

Grant and I grew older.

Our marriage continued quietly. We traveled sometimes, celebrated anniversaries, repaired the house, and settled into retirement.

Then Grant became ill.

His decline was relatively short, and I stayed beside him until the end.

After he was gone, the house became unbearably quiet.

Sometimes I looked across the street and remembered the thin boy in the too-small jacket.

I wondered whether Caleb had married.

Whether he had children.

Whether he ever remembered my kitchen.

Whether he hated me.

The Man at My Door

Twenty years after Caleb left, on a rainy Thursday afternoon, my doorbell rang.

I checked the porch camera.

A tall man in a dark coat stood beneath the awning.

He was holding a large black box.

At first, I didn’t recognize him.

Then he pushed his hair away from his forehead.

Caleb had done that whenever he was nervous since childhood.

My heart seemed to stop.

I opened the door.

“Caleb?”

His eyes filled with emotion.

“Hello, Mrs. Winslow.”

For several seconds, neither of us knew what to do.

Finally, I whispered, “I thought I would never see you again.”

He looked down.

“I wasn’t sure you wanted to.”

That hurt more than I expected.

“I missed you.”

He swallowed.

“I missed you too.”

Then he lifted the box.

“I came to return something.”

The Truth Inside the Box

I carried the box to the dining room table.

It was surprisingly heavy.

For one wild second, I expected to find my missing jewelry inside.

Instead, there were folders.

Bank statements.

Old envelopes.

Copies of business records.

And beneath them was the small metal case from our garage.

I stared at it.

Caleb sat across from me.

Then he said quietly, “I know what you believed all these years.”

I could barely speak.

“Did you take my jewelry?”

He closed his eyes briefly.

“I never intended to take anything from you.”

Then he pointed toward the metal case.

“I took that.”

I didn’t understand.

Caleb explained that the night before he left for college, he had seen Grant carrying the metal case upstairs.

Grant had noticed Caleb watching him and reacted with such fear that Caleb became suspicious.

Later, when the house was quiet, Caleb entered the bedroom and found the case.

Inside were account numbers, payment records, handwritten ledgers, and documents involving businesses Caleb had never heard of.

As he tried to remove the case, several necklaces and small jewelry pieces underneath it became tangled around the handle.
