If your wife’s underwear has these stains, here’s what they mean

Part 2 of 2

More complex than you might think

Contrary to popular belief, discharge isn’t “dirty.” In fact, it’s pretty sophisticated! It’s made up of a natural mix that includes:

  • Mucus from the cervix and glands of the vulva
  • Dead skin cells that are gently flushed out
  • A bit of fluid from nearby blood vessels
  • And most importantly, healthy vaginal flora rich in good bacteria

Much like saliva in your mouth, discharge plays a key role in maintaining balance and protecting against outside irritants.

When should you be concerned?

If discharge becomes very heavy, has an unusual color or smell, or is accompanied by discomfort, it’s a good idea to check in with a healthcare provider. Some signs to watch for:

  • A clumpy texture, especially if it comes with a burning sensation, could point to a disruption in your vaginal flora.
  • A strong or unpleasant odor? Time to get it checked.
  • Greenish or foamy discharge? Best not to ignore it.

Other red flags include pain when urinating, pelvic discomfort, or unusual bleeding. These aren’t always serious, but a medical opinion can help identify the issue quickly and get you back to feeling your best.

Caring for your vaginal flora, made simple

The vaginal environment is delicate and deserves a little care. Here are a few easy ways to protect it:

  • Choose cotton underwear and avoid overly tight pants
  • Skip harsh or heavily scented products when washing your intimate area
  • Eat a balanced diet—yes, your food choices affect your vaginal health too
  • Pay attention to your body, learn what’s normal for you, and notice when something changes

That’s truly the best way to take care of your intimate health.
