“Mom Needs $155,000 for Emergency Heart Surgery,” My Brother Called From the Hospital. I Rushed There Ready to Help—but Before I Entered Her Room, a Nurse Pulled Me Aside and Whispered, “Stay Quiet. They Don’t Know You’re Here.” Minutes Later, I Realized Mom’s “Emergency” Wasn’t What I’d Been Told—and Then I Heard Them Mention Dad’s Retirement Savings and My Money. I Said Nothing, Walked Into the Room Pretending I Knew Nothing, and Let Them Believe Their Plan Was Working

Part 2 of 3

“Not yet.”

“Good.”

I walked toward Room 418.

Before entering, I took a breath and forced myself to look frightened.

Then I opened the door.

“Mom!”

Garrett spun around.

For one second, I saw surprise.

Then his face transformed into concern.

“Paige! Thank goodness.”

I hurried toward the bed.

Mom immediately leaned back against her pillow and closed her eyes.

“Honey…”

I took her hand.

“How are you feeling?”

“Scared,” she whispered.

Garrett put a hand on my shoulder.

“We need to figure out the money quickly.”

There it was.

Not thirty seconds after I arrived.

“What exactly do they need?” I asked.

Garrett produced a folder from the chair beside him.

“I’ve been trying to organize everything. Between possible treatment, follow-up care, and other expenses, we need access to about $155,000.”

I stared at the folder.

It wasn’t an official hospital demand.

It was Garrett’s collection of estimates, account information, and transfer instructions.

That difference mattered.

I pretended not to notice.

“Okay,” I whispered. “Let me figure out what I can move.”

Garrett visibly relaxed.

They thought the difficult part was over.

I Made One Phone Call

I stepped into the hallway and called my father.

He answered immediately.

“Paige, I’m almost there. How is your mother?”

“Dad, before you come upstairs, I need you to check something.”

“What?”

“Open your banking app.”

There was silence.

“Why?”

“Please.”

I waited.

A minute later, his voice returned.

It sounded different.

“The transfer went through.”

“How much?”

He told me.

It was more than I expected.

I closed my eyes.

“Who did you send it to?”

“Garrett gave me the account details. He said it was needed because your mother might require immediate care.”

“Was the account in the hospital’s name?”

Silence.

“I… I don’t know.”

“Dad, come upstairs. Don’t call Garrett first.”

“Paige, what’s happening?”

I looked through the small window in Mom’s door.

Garrett was smiling at something she had said.

“You’re going to hear it for yourself.”

Everyone Arrived

My father reached Room 418 about fifteen minutes later.

By then, Aunt Lorraine and two cousins had also arrived after Garrett had told them Mom was facing a frightening medical situation.

Dad rushed to her bedside.

“Diane.”

Mom immediately reached for him.

“Walter.”

He looked exhausted.

“Are you all right?”

“I’m trying to be.”

Garrett stepped forward.

“Dad, let her rest.”

Then he turned toward me.

“Paige, were you able to arrange the transfer?”

Everyone looked at me.

I deliberately opened my banking app.

“Not yet.”

His expression tightened.

“Why not?”

“Because $155,000 is a large amount of money.”

“We already talked about this.”

“You talked. I listened.”

The room became noticeably quieter.

Garrett stared at me.

“What is that supposed to mean?”

I put my phone away.

Then Dad reached for his wallet.

“If Paige needs time, I can use whatever I have left.”

Garrett reacted immediately.

“No, Dad.”

Walter frowned.

“Why not?”

“Because you already sent enough.”

My father froze.

“Enough for what?”

Garrett said nothing.

Dad looked at Mom.

“Diane?”

She avoided his eyes.

That was when I knew it was time.

The Recording Changed Everything

“Dad, there’s something you need to hear.”

I pulled out my phone.

Garrett stepped toward me.

“Paige, what are you doing?”

I pressed play.

His own voice filled the room.

“She always helps. The only difference is that this time she needs to believe we don’t have another option.”

Garrett went pale.

Then came Mom’s voice.

“One hundred and fifty-five thousand is a lot, even for Paige.”

And Garrett again:

“She will if she thinks you’re scared and the family is depending on her.”

Nobody moved.

Aunt Lorraine slowly covered her mouth.

My father stared at my mother.

The recording continued.

Then everyone heard the sentence about his retirement savings.

“Dad already transferred money this morning.”

Walter turned toward Garrett.

“You knew where that money came from.”

Garrett swallowed.

“Dad, listen—”

“You knew.”

Then Mom’s recorded voice came through:

“Your father always panics when he thinks something is wrong with me.”

I stopped the recording.

Silence filled the room.

Mom sat upright.

She no longer looked weak.

“Walter, this sounds worse than it was.”

My father stared at her.

“Then tell me what it was.”

She had no answer.

Mother and Son Turned on Each Other

Garrett was the first to break.

“This wasn’t all my idea.”

Mom stared at him.

“Excuse me?”

“You wanted the remodeling money.”
