I looked at Nathan.

“Who is Owen Briggs?”

His jaw tightened.

“I don’t know.”

Lauren opened her binder.

“Then perhaps these will refresh your memory.”

She spread printed emails and financial statements across the counter. Their family had once owned a small property-management company, and Lauren still had legitimate access to its administrative account. Judith apparently had forgotten to remove her permissions.

The messages concerned our home.

Walter had already found a private buyer. The proposed price was far below its market value, and the transaction was being described as urgent. Several emails referred to obtaining original documents to verify information and complete signature pages before I could object.

Nathan’s address appeared in two of the exchanges.

One message said that if I reviewed the documents too soon, I would stop the arrangement. Another instructed Walter’s assistant not to contact me directly.

“Explain this,” I told Nathan.

He rubbed both hands over his face.

“I knew Walter wanted to prepare an offer. I didn’t know anyone was going to enter the house.”

“You knew they wanted my documents.”

“Only to put together a proposal.”

Lauren slid another page toward me. It contained a scanned version of my signature placed beneath a draft authorization I had never seen.

“Was this part of the proposal?” I asked.

Nathan said nothing.

Judith reached for the papers, but Lauren pulled them away.

“Don’t make this worse by pretending it isn’t real.”

The financial records revealed that Nathan had secretly invested nearly $185,000 in one of Walter’s development projects. Much of the money had come from Judith’s savings and a loan secured against property she owned with Lauren.

The project had collapsed. Nathan could not repay Judith, and Judith was at risk of losing the family property. Walter’s solution was to arrange a private sale of our house for $475,000, although two recent appraisals placed its value above $620,000.

The missing amount would be divided among commissions, Walter’s fees, Judith’s repayment, and Nathan’s debt.

I was supposed to learn about everything only after the plan had advanced so far that agreeing would seem easier than resisting.

“You were going to trade our home for your secret,” I said.

“I was trying to protect us,” Nathan replied.

“From what?”

He looked down at the papers.

“From finding out how badly I failed.”

Before I could answer, my phone sounded.

The security system had detected movement at the back entrance.

The time was 7:57.

I opened the camera feed. Owen Briggs stood beside the rear door wearing the same charcoal jacket and navy cap from the mall. A dark tool bag rested at his feet.

Judith lifted a hand to her mouth.

Nathan whispered, “He wasn’t supposed to come if we were home.”

That sentence told me more than any confession could have.

Then Nathan’s phone began vibrating. A moment later, Judith’s rang as well.

Owen was calling both of them.

What the Officers Found

The security dispatcher stayed on the line while Owen tested the rear handle and removed a narrow metal tool from his bag. His movements were calm and deliberate, suggesting that someone had explained exactly where that entrance led.

From the back door, he could reach the office without crossing the living room.

Nathan pushed back his chair.

“I’ll tell him to leave.”

“Sit down,” I said.

Something in my voice made him obey.

Lauren moved beside me.

“The officers are coming. No one is warning him.”

Two patrol cars arrived within minutes. One officer came to the front while another walked around the side of the house. I handed them the report number from the previous afternoon, the mall recording, the photographs, the printed emails, and the live security footage.

They questioned Owen away from the house and examined the contents of his bag. In his pocket, they found the key Judith had given him. The bag held gloves, blank property-transfer forms, a small metal bar, and a printed copy of our weekday schedule.

Paige appeared halfway down the stairs while the officers were still outside.

I had asked her to remain in her room, but she had already carried more uncertainty than any child should have to hold alone.

“Was that man coming into our house?” she asked.

Nathan stepped toward her.

“Sweetheart, it wasn’t supposed to happen this way.”

She looked at him carefully.

“Did you know he was coming?”

“I knew he might collect some documents.”

“Mom’s documents?”

He did not answer.

“And my passport?”

Again, there was only silence.

Paige moved away from him and came to stand beside me. In that small step, something within our family quietly closed.
