He Then Kept Laughing About How He Had Finally “Taught” My Daughter to Listen While His Mother Praised Him Across the Dinner Table—Neither of Them Noticed the Silent Decision I Made Before Dessert Was Served

Part 2 of 3

Then to mine.

For the first time that afternoon, I saw something stronger than arrogance.

I saw panic.

He Locked the Dining Room Before Anyone Could Leave

Adrian’s eyes stayed on Emily for another second before he smiled again.

It was the same polished smile he’d worn when he greeted me at the front door.

Only now I knew what sat behind it.

“Everything okay in there?” he asked.

Emily nodded too quickly.

“Just helping Mom with dessert.”

He looked at the pie dish in her hands.

Then at me.

“You two seemed busy.”

“We were talking.”

He laughed.

“About me?”

I pulled out a chair and sat down.

“Mostly about Emily’s arm.”

For a split second, his expression tightened.

Then it disappeared.

“I already explained that.”

Celeste folded her napkin.

“Margaret, accidents happen. Young couples don’t need parents investigating every bruise.”

I looked directly at Emily.

“Did it happen the way Adrian described?”

Emily opened her mouth.

No sound came out.

Adrian answered for her.

“See? She’s embarrassed. Let’s not make dinner uncomfortable.”

I had seen that before.

The abuser always volunteered the victim’s answers.

I reached for my coffee instead of arguing.

The recorder remained hidden inside my handbag.

Every word around this table was being preserved.

A few minutes later, Adrian’s younger brother, Nolan, walked in through the garage carrying a laptop bag.

“Sorry I’m late,” he said. “Board meeting ran over.”

He kissed Celeste on the cheek before noticing me.

“Mrs. Montgomery.”

I nodded politely.

Emily’s shoulders became even more tense.

Nolan sat beside Adrian without asking what he’d missed.

Instead he said something that immediately caught my attention.

“Did accounting ever ask about Harbor Supply?”

Adrian shot him a quick look.

Too quick.

“Not now.”

Nolan stopped talking.

Emily stared down at her plate.

I didn’t recognize the company name, but Emily did.

I could tell by the way her fingers tightened around her fork.

I quietly repeated the name to myself.

Harbor Supply.

One fake vendor.

That was enough.

The rest could wait.

Conversation drifted toward football and vacation plans.

Only Adrian seemed unable to relax.

Every few minutes his eyes wandered toward Emily.

Toward her pockets.

Toward the kitchen.

As though he were mentally checking whether something had been moved.

Finally he stood.

“Emily.”

She looked up.

“Bring me your phone.”

The room went still.

“Why?”

“Because I asked.”

Emily hesitated.

Adrian’s voice stayed calm.

That almost made it worse.

“You don’t need your phone during family dinner.”

She slowly handed it over.

He unlocked it with the passcode he obviously already knew.

He scrolled through her recent messages.

Then through her photos.

Then her email.

No one spoke.

After nearly a minute he placed it on the table.

“Good.”

He smiled again.

“You’re finally learning transparency.”

Celeste nodded approvingly.

“Secrets destroy marriages.”

I kept my face neutral.

Inside my purse, the recorder continued capturing every word.

Emily carried the empty plates toward the kitchen.

I stood to help.

Before we reached the doorway, Adrian spoke again.

“Actually, Margaret…”

I turned.

“Why don’t you stay here?”

His tone sounded casual.

His eyes did not.

I returned to my chair.

Emily disappeared into the kitchen alone.

Less than a minute later she came back without the dishes.

She looked frightened.

Very frightened.

She sat down without being asked.

Adrian leaned forward.

“I was thinking.”

No one answered.

“You two got awfully quiet earlier.”

He folded his hands together.

“What exactly were you discussing?”

“Family,” I replied.

“That’s vague.”

“Families usually are.”

His smile faded.

For the first time that afternoon, he stopped pretending to be charming.

“Emily.”

She looked at him.

“Tell your mother what you told me last week.”

Emily remained silent.

“Go ahead.”

Still nothing.

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Tell her you’re imagining things.”

Emily looked at me instead.

Then, very quietly, she said,

“I’m not imagining anything.”

The room froze.

Celeste pushed back her chair.

“Emily, enough.”

Adrian stood so suddenly his chair scraped across the hardwood floor.

He walked to the dining room entrance.

Without taking his eyes off either of us, he reached over and turned the deadbolt.

Click.

The sound was soft.

It echoed anyway.

I glanced toward the front hallway.

The door was now locked from the inside.

Adrian slipped the key into his pocket.

Then he calmly returned to the table.

“Nobody’s leaving until I know what she gave you.”

Emily’s face turned white.

My phone vibrated once inside my handbag.

Only once.

Raymond.

They were here.

All I had to do now… was keep Adrian talking a little longer.

The One Question Adrian Couldn’t Answer

Adrian’s smile disappeared.

“What did she give you?”

I stayed seated.

“You’re locking your family in a dining room because of a conversation?”

“Answer me.”

Emily’s breathing became uneven.

“She didn’t give Mom anything.”

Adrian looked at her as if she hadn’t spoken.

Then he reached across the table and grabbed her injured arm.

Emily cried out.

The sound echoed through the room.
