“We’re Catherine Hale’s children.”

A painful recognition crossed Margaret’s face.

“All four of you?”

“We were born on the same day,” Miles explained.

The house behind her became completely silent.

The Future Waiting by the Fireplace

Adrian stood beside the fireplace in the grand dining room, dressed in his naval formal uniform. A poised blonde woman named Paige Mercer rested one hand on his arm. Beside them, white roses and candles surrounded an open bottle of sparkling cider, and Adrian held a velvet ring box.

He had arranged every detail of his proposal.

Then he saw me.

His expression first showed irritation, as though I had arrived late to play the role he had assigned me. But his gaze lowered toward Owen, moved to Miles, paused on Ruby, and finally reached June.

The ring box fell beside his polished shoes.

Paige withdrew her hand from his arm.

“Adrian, who are these children?”

He opened his mouth, but no answer came.

I rested one hand on June’s shoulder.

“You invited me to Christmas dinner, Captain. I thought it was time your family met the four grandchildren they were told had never existed.”

Whispers moved through the room.

Margaret leaned against a chair, staring at Adrian as if she had never truly seen him before. Paige stepped farther away.

“You told me Catherine had made everything up,” Margaret said.

“That’s what I believed,” Adrian replied.

“No,” I said quietly. “That is what you chose to say.”

Owen released my hand and walked toward him. My son was small compared with the decorated officer standing before the fireplace, yet he looked directly into Adrian’s eyes without lowering his own.

“Are you the man who said Mom invented our heartbeats?”

Adrian’s face tightened.

“Owen, come back to me,” I said gently.

He remained where he was.

“Mom kept the recordings. We listen to them on our birthday.”

Ruby lowered her eyes to the cookie tin. June moved closer to my coat, while Miles watched Adrian with the careful concentration he usually reserved for machinery.

Paige turned toward him.

“What recordings?”

I removed a slim folder from my bag.

“Four prenatal heart recordings, four birth certificates, and four confirmed paternity reports.”

Adrian finally spoke my name.

“Catherine…”

“Don’t say my name as though you’ve only just remembered it.”

Margaret covered her mouth.

“He told us there were no children.”

“I know.”

At that moment, two officers from the Naval Inspector General’s office entered with Erin. Their arrival had been arranged in advance, not to create a public spectacle, but because Adrian had repeatedly declared on official forms that he had no dependents. Those forms had affected assignments, allowances, and sworn personnel records.

Commander Isaac Warren approached him.

“Captain Caldwell, we need your statement regarding possible omissions and inaccurate declarations in your service documents.”

Adrian straightened.

“This is a private family matter.”

Erin opened the sealed case.

“Your family choices are private. Signed federal records are not.”

Adrian looked at the documents, and I saw something more revealing than surprise. I saw recognition.

He had known.

Paige saw it too.

“You told me you were unable to have children.”

No one moved.

Margaret stared at her son. “Adrian, what have you done?”

He turned sharply toward her. “Don’t start judging me now.”

She drew herself upright.

“You invited this woman here so we could watch you propose while believing she had nothing. You brought her here to humiliate her.”

For once, Margaret Caldwell was not defending the family name. She was confronting what had been hidden beneath it.

Ruby approached her and held out the cookie tin.

“We made these for everyone.”

Margaret slowly lowered herself to Ruby’s height without reaching for her.

“What is your name?”

“Ruby Anne Hale.”

Margaret’s eyes filled with tears. Anne had been her own mother’s name, something Adrian had never learned because he had never asked what his children were called.

“I was told you weren’t real,” Margaret whispered.
