She looked as though she had been crying for hours.

“Is Grant here?”

“No. He’s flying today. Can I help you?”

She hesitated.

“I need to talk to him.”

“Who are you?”

“Savannah Reese.”

The name meant nothing to me.

I asked whether she wanted to leave a message.

She shook her head.

Then she looked past me into the house as though she suddenly realized exactly where she was.

“I shouldn’t have come.”

She walked away before I could ask anything else.

That evening, I mentioned her to Grant.

His reaction lasted barely a second, but I noticed it.

“Savannah stopped by today.”

His hand paused over the refrigerator door.

“Savannah?”

“She was crying and asking for you.”

He quickly explained that she worked in scheduling for the airline and was dealing with a difficult situation involving another employee.

“I’ve just been giving her some advice.”

I asked why she would come to our home.

Grant shrugged.

“She was emotional. She probably wasn’t thinking clearly.”

Something felt wrong.

But our marriage appeared normal.

There were no mysterious overnight trips beyond his published schedules, no obvious secret calls, and no sudden financial changes.

Eventually, I told myself I was imagining things.

Now I was sitting on Grant’s aircraft listening to him tell hundreds of strangers that Savannah was expecting his daughter.

The Longest Two Hours of My Life

The aircraft began moving toward the runway.

That ended any idea I had of confronting Grant immediately.

Cody was crying quietly beside me.

“Is Dad going to leave us?”

I took his hands.

“I don’t know exactly what is happening yet.”

“Does he love that baby more than me?”

That question hurt more than anything Grant had said.

I pulled Cody against my shoulder.

“Nothing about another child changes the fact that you are his son.”

For the entire flight, Cody barely spoke.

The snacks he had excitedly packed remained untouched.

His handmade card stayed inside his backpack.

Every few minutes, I looked at him and reminded myself that whatever I was feeling, he had just experienced something confusing and frightening too.

I could fall apart later.

For now, he needed a parent who could remain steady.

The Truth Waiting in Dallas

After landing, we let most passengers leave first.

Then Cody and I walked through the terminal.

Near an airline lounge, I saw Grant.

Savannah stood beside him.

One hand rested gently over her stomach.

She no longer looked like the frightened woman who had appeared on my doorstep months earlier.

She looked confident.

Comfortable.

Almost relieved.

Then she saw us.

Grant followed her gaze.

His face went pale.

“Lauren?”

Cody immediately began crying.

“Dad, what did you mean on the plane?”

Grant stared at us.

“What are you doing here?”

I almost laughed.

“We came to surprise you.”

He closed his eyes.

I looked at Savannah.

“So this is the coworker who needed your professional advice?”

Grant glanced around the terminal.

“Lauren, please. Not here.”

I kept my voice quiet.

“You just told an entire airplane that you’re having a child with her and planning a future together. I think we are past worrying about privacy.”

Savannah finally spoke.

“At least everything is out now.”

I turned toward her.

“Everything?”

Grant stepped closer.

“Can we discuss this privately?”

“How long?”

He hesitated.

That hesitation answered half the question.

“About eleven months.”

I felt strangely calm.

Maybe there are moments when reality becomes so large that your mind refuses to react normally.

“And when were you planning to tell me?”

Grant rubbed the back of his neck.

“Soon.”

“Before or after your daughter was born?”

He looked away.

Then he said something even worse.

“I already spoke with an attorney.”

I stared at him.

“About what?”

“Ending the marriage.”

Behind me, Cody made a small sound.

Grant immediately realized his son had heard him.

“Cody, buddy, please—”

Cody stepped behind me.

“Don’t.”

Grant stopped moving.

I picked up our bags.

“We’re leaving.”

“Lauren, let me explain this to him.”

I looked at the man I had shared thirteen years with.

“You already did. You just did it at thirty thousand feet.”

Cody and I found a quiet café near another concourse.

I bought him a milkshake he barely touched.
