Why Mussels Shouldn’t Be Eaten In Months With An “R”

Part 2 of 2

Mussel Reproduction and Quality of the Product

In autumn and winter, mussels enter their reproductive phase. This process is energy-intensive for the shellfish and alters their internal makeup, affecting the quality of the meat.

When a mollusk is reproducing, its energy is focused on reproduction, which reduces the quality of its flesh. Like many other seafood items (including fish), mussels tend to taste less flavorful and appear more “stressed” during this period.

If you come across fresh mussels in winter, they’re likely imported from waters very different from the Mediterranean—possibly from colder oceans. These mussels may not offer the same flavor or quality as those harvested during the summer season, when they’re at their freshest.

When to Eat Clams

Like mussels, clams are also at their best during months without an “R”—from May through August. During this time, clams are in season and are fresher and tastier. The risk of bacterial contamination is also lower since warmer seawater helps maintain better marine conditions.

It’s generally advised to avoid eating clams between September and April to ensure a safer and more flavorful experience. However, regardless of the season, it’s always important to check where the clams come from to guarantee their freshness and safety.
