Donald Trump makes thinly veiled dig at Prince Harry during state banquet with Prince William, King Charles

Part 2 of 2

A History of Criticism Toward Harry and Meghan

This wasn’t the first time Trump has taken jabs at Harry and Meghan Markle. In 2020, he declared the U.S. would not pay for the couple’s security after their move to California, though the pair had already arranged private protection.

Two years later, he told Piers Morgan that Harry was “whipped like no person he has ever seen.”

In 2024, back in office, Trump suggested Harry could be deported over admissions of drug use in his memoir Spare. “If he lied [on his application], they’ll have to take appropriate action,” he told GB News, stressing that “special privileges” wouldn’t apply.

By early 2025, however, Trump softened his stance. “I’ll leave him alone,” he said in February. “He’s got enough problems with his wife. She’s terrible. … I think poor Harry is being led around by the nose.”

Eric Trump Adds Fuel

Trump’s son, Eric, has also made headlines for dismissive remarks about the Sussexes. “I don’t give a damn about Prince Harry and I don’t think this country does either,” the 41-year-old told the Daily Mail in October 2024, after previously calling them “spoiled apples.”

Meghan’s Past Criticism of Trump

Meghan, meanwhile, had voiced criticism of Trump years before marrying Harry. In a 2016 interview on The Nightly Show With Larry Winmore, she described the then-candidate as “divisive” and “misogynistic,” adding, “Trump has made it easy to see that you don’t really want that kind of world that he’s painting.”

She revisited those comments in an August 2024 interview on The Circuit, explaining: “I was excited to be on the show. I think if there’s anything that I wanted to say or that felt necessary to say, then I would say it, but that’s not where I’m at right now. I haven’t said anything since 2016. That was well before I met my husband.”
